EXETER-Mary E. Smith, 88, formerly of Pittston, passed away Tuesday evening in Highland Manor Nursing Home, Exeter. Born in Hughestown on December 24, 1921, she was a daughter of the late Chancy and Ora (Dennis) Welter. She was a graduate of Hughestown High School. Mary attended the United Methodist Church of Pittston. She was a member of the American Legion Woman's Auxiliary, Taylor and the VFW, Duryea. She enjoyed playing bingo and shopping. Prior to retiring, she was employed by Ransom Convalescent Home as a Nurse's Aide for 22 years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by 2 sisters and 7 brothers. Surviving are her daughters, Judy Murray and her companion, Jim Callahan, Sr., Pittston; Betty Herron and her husband, Edward, Avoca; Carol Crich and her husband Charles, West Pittston; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be held Friday evening at 5:00 p.m. at Kniffen O'Malley Funeral Home, Inc., 728 Main Street, Avoca, with the Reverend Doctor Michael Turner officiating. Friends may call Friday from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Mary's family would like to thank the staff of Highland Manor and Hospice Community Care for her care.
