Mary Caroline Hively, 101, died January 6, 2018 at her home. She was the wife for 61 years of Paul C. Hively who died December 26, 2002. Mrs. Hively was born March 20, 1916 in Chanceford Township near Bethel Methodist Church, the daughter of the late Benjamin Franklin and Minnie Elsie (Forry) Lighty and the granddaughter of Maynard and Bertha (Darrah/Zarfoss) Lighty and Welby and Caroline (Ilgas) Forry. A resident of Chanceford Township all her life, she was a 1934 graduate of Red Lion High School and attended Millersville State Teachers College for one year. A farm wife, she enjoyed flowers, vegetable gardening, canning and freezing produce, cooking, sewing drapes and clothing. She was blessed with wonderful eyesight her entire life so that in her last years she could enjoy her love of reading as well as watching clouds and birds out her patio door. A faithful member of New Harmony Presbyterian Church since 1947, she was a member of its Sunday School and its Women’s Missionary Association, and formerly served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher and Vacation Bible School teacher. Earlier in life she was a member of Bethel Methodist Church. A kind and gentle person, she cared deeply for others and especially her family. She is survived by three children, David P. Hively and wife Betty of Red Lion; Ruth Ann Wert and husband Philip of Chambersburg; Lois E. Fornwalt and husband Robert of York; grandchildren Bryan Wert and wife Kathlyn of Las Vegas, NV; Pamela Wert of Chambersburg; Alan Fornwalt and wife Wendy of Fogelsville; and Amy Golden of York; great-grandchildren Benjamin Fornwalt, Megan Fornwalt, Emily Fornwalt, Caroline Hake and Mikayla Golden. She is also survived by numerous nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by her brother John Lighty and his wife Helen. The family expresses sincere thanks and gratitude to the care givers from the Deanie Taylor King Personal Care Service who provided TLC to Mary for over five and one-half years. Those presently caring for her were Sandy, Malinda, Jeannette, Tonya and Dena. A viewing will be from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 13 at New Harmony Presbyterian Church, 2295 Delta Road, Brogue 17309. A Celebration of Life service will follow at 11 a.m. in the Church with her pastor Rev. Beth Appel officiating and Rev. John R. Maisch assisting. Burial in New Harmony Cemetery will follow the service. Life Tributes by Olewiler & Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 35 Gotham Place, Red Lion is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to New Harmony Presbyterian Church at the above address or to an organization of your choice.
