Mary A. Lascala , 91, of 7716 Shadowcreek Terrace Springfield VA, formerly of Pottsville died Sunday Novemeber 24, 2013 at Inova Fairfax Hospital, VA. Born June 18, 1922 in Pottsville she was the daughter of the late Anthony and Jenny (Kutch) Lascala. She was a 1941 Graduate of Pottsville High School. After graduation she enlisted in the US Navy in the WAVES on June 1, 1943 and received her basic training at Hunter College NY. She was stationed in Norman OK, Peru Ill and Hawaii. While in the WAVES she was an aviation mechanic second class. After being honorably discharged from the military she lived in Hawaii before moving to Virginia and accepting a position as a Communications Specialist at the Pentagon. Upon retiring, Mary worked as a sound operator for Arlington Public Television; she was an avid reader, collector of books and loved to golf. She was a member of the Claredon Senior Center where she was active in yoga, aerobics, the investment club and the walking club. She along with the other members of the walking club walked across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge twice. She also volunteered her time to the Meals on Wheels in VA and the Arlington Democratic Party. She enjoyed watching her favorite NFL football team the Washington Redskins, vacationing at Stone Harbor NJ and camping at Rosemont and Twin Groves Campgrounds; but most of all she enjoyed her trips back home to PA and her visits with her family. She was a member of the former St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, Pottsville and a member of St. Thomas Moore Cathedral, Arlington VA. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother Frank Lascala; sisters Louise Sosnoskie and Angie Dudish; and an aunt Mary Kutch. Mary was the beloved aunt of Sandi Greisbaum, Pottsville and her children Krista, Kevin and Keith; Matthew Dudish, Pottsville and his children Amanda and Drew; Karen Gelting, Deer Lake and her son Garrett; Kathy Lasacala, Springfield VA; Theresa Chuprinsky, Reading and her daughters Arianna and Alena; and Anthony Lascala, Pottsville and his daughters Rebecca, Grace and Emily. She is also survived by Kyra, Nathan, Isabella, Neil and Lily her great-great nieces and nephews. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 o’clock at St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, Pottsville. Family and friends may call from 8 to 930 at the funeral home. Interment with military honors will be held at St. Joseph RC Cemetery, Pottsville. The family would prefer donations be made to the Lymphoma & Leukemia Society of Arlington and the Arlington Independent Media 2701-C Wilson Blvd. Arlington VA 22201.
