Marianne Elsa (Ehm) Chernewski

YORK-Marianne Elsa (Ehm) Chernewski died peacefully Monday evening, October 24, 2011 at Colonial Manor in York. She was the wife of the late Paul Chernewski, who died in 2008. They were married for 53 years. Marianne was born June 18, 1922 in Plauen-Volgt., Germany, the daughter of the late Else and Oskar Ehm. She attended schools in Germany, where she excelled in Art and her dream was to be an artist. Her father, being of the old school, wanted her to be a nurse, but that was not to be because she fainted when she saw blood. So, instead, she joined the German Women Work Army- stationed in rural Poland which she hated. Her happiest times were spending time either at her aunts Toni and Othella houses or on the family farm in Czechoslovakia with her cousin, Alfred. After her father died in a bomb raid during the end of WWII, she escaped by herself with just a little blue suitcase from the Russian sector to the American sector of Germany. In Wiesbaden, she worked at various jobs for the American Military. This is where she met John Guzanich, Karin’s father, who died shortly after Karin was born. Not wishing to relocate to Ohio, where John’s family resided, she stayed in Wiesbaden raising her daughter alone with no family nearby. That is until she met Paul in 1954. They married and finally relocated to York in 1955. Marianne worked briefly at Jayson, before she became a self-employed domestic, who was highly respected and treated more as a trusted friend, then employee. She had a heart of gold, but if you crossed her-even if you did not, she would give her a piece of her mind. She will be remembered for the love of her soaps, especially “As the World Turns”, scandal magazines, and Linden Truffles. Marianne leaves behind her daughter, Karin, son–in-law Douglas, grandson, James Wilson who she adored-granddaughter-in-law Jessica, step grandson Jeff, and three great grandchildren: Alissa, Logan, and Dexter. She was preceded in death by a step grandson, Justin and numerous cousins. Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 29, 2011 at Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc. 1551 Kenneth Rd. in York, with a visitation from 10-11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Holy Saviour Cemetery in York. The family requests that attendee’s of the service dress comfortably and casually.
