Troy, PA - Marian Mae Greenough Spalding, 88 of Troy, PA, passed away Wednesday, February 3, 2010 at Bradford County Manor. Marion was born August 17, 1921 in Troy, PA, the daughter of the late LaVerne and Gertrude VanHorn Greenough. She attended the four-room school in East Troy and then was a graduate of Troy High School in 1938 where she was active in the music department and was the Head Majorette of the original Drum and Bugle Corps for four years. Marian also was a 1942 graduate of Mansfield University with a B.S. degree in Music and English. She was a member of Lambda Mu and Kappa Delta Phi. In 1977 she was a graduate of Elmira College with a M.S. degree as a Reading Specialist. Marian taught music, English and reading in the Tory Area Schools for thirty years. Her first assignment in 1942 was to teach music in eleven rural schools of the district, four of which were one-room schools. Music has always been an important part of her life. She said she did her praying and praising with music. Marian was a member of the East Troy Baptist Church until August of 1942. She then became a member of the 1st United Methodist Church of Troy where she served as a trustee on the Administrative Council, taught Sunday School and directed the choir for many years. She was also part of the Troy Study Club, Retired Teachers of PA and a past 50year member of the Troy Grange. Marian and her husband Curtis owned and operated the Troy Tastee Freez for 29 years and the Troy Motel for the past 47 years. Surviving are her husband of 67 years, Curtis E. Spalding, daughter, Cheryl (Edgar) Wright, sons, K. Roderick Spalding and Curtis D. Sr. (Deborah) Spalding, six grandchildren, Terry Spalding, Curtis D. Jr. (Wendy) Spalding, Ginger (Roger) Lathrop, Will (Stacy) Spalding, Travis (Corrinne) Spalding and Taffy (Phil) Bowman, 14 great-grandchildren, sister-in-law, Josephine Greenough. She was predeceased by her parents, two brothers, Edwin and Lynn, two sisters, Doris Lust and Catherine Mahoney. Family and friends are invited to call from 2 to 4 PM Sunday, February 7, 2010 at the Gerald W. Vickery, Jr. Funeral Home, Inc. 110 West Main Street, Troy, PA. Marian's funeral service will be held 11 AM Monday, February 8, 2010 at the First United Methodist Church of Troy, 205 Redington Ave. Troy, PA with Reverend Richard Noggle officiating. Interment will be in Glenwood cemetery, Troy, PA. Memorials are directed to the First United Methodist Church of Troy Choir Fund, 205 Redington Ave. Troy, PA 16947.
