Malvin H. Shultz, Sr.

NORTHUMBERLAND - Malvin H. Shultz, Sr., passed away on September 3, 2017 at the age of 87. He was born on December 8, 1929 in Danville and was the son of the late Melvin C. and Margaret E (Bower) Shultz. On November 13, 1952 he married Kathryn M. Scott, who survives. Upon graduation from high school in 1948, he joined the Air Force. Malvin entered the Air Force with the goal of becoming a pilot, but due to the Air Force height restriction his goal was not achieved. The Air Force requested his attendance in the Training Command, but instead, he chose Aircraft School at the Kessler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Miss. Upon graduation, he was based in Germany where he was assigned to a group responsible for debriefing and/or providing further instruction to fellow pilots. Because of this assignment, he was promoted to Officer status. Malvin’s next assignment would place him in New Rochelle, N.Y., and while there, performed many tasks. One important accomplishment occurred during his time in the Engineering department in the Squadron Hanger where he was given the task of devising a better aircraft maintenance log. Completion of this project was recognized by the Department of Air Force at the Pentagon and Malvin was assigned the task of starting a school to train others on the makeup of the maintenance log. This accomplishment prompted an offer to accept a commission and be the officer in charge of aircraft maintenance. Malvin declined this position and was then deployed overseas where he established a training office for the pilots. At the end of his four years he was offered a class for Officer training but he declined as his wish was to return to Pennsylvania and marry Kathryn. When he returned to civilian life, he was employed by Cabinet Industries and The Silk Mill in Danville, Miller Furniture Store and Big Boys Auto Parts in Sunbury, and finally Kennedy Van Saun in Danville, retiring in May 1995. He was a life member of the National Rifle Association and the Norry Gun Club. He enjoyed hunting each fall with his sons, with turkey hunting being his favorite. In addition to his wife, Malvin is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law; Malvin Jr. and Anita of Watsontown and Michael and Linda of Hughesville, three granddaughters; Erika Shultz of Sunbury, Laura Shappell of Easton, and Amy Boyer and husband Chris of Milton, Delaware, three grandsons, Alec Persun and companion Julie Miller of Montoursville, Andrew Persun and companion Tara Batdorf of Watsontown, and David Mattern of Montoursville, five great grandchildren; Ava Shappell, Oliva Boyer, Kyrie Persun, Oliver Persun, and Ezra Miller and one sister Dawn Day of Lehighton A public viewing will be held from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m., Friday, September 8, 2017 at Dale Ranck Cremation & Funeral Care, 125 N. Front Street, Milton followed by the funeral at 7:00 p.m. with Pastor Leslie Halchak of Trinity United Methodist Church, Northumberland officiating. As to Malvin’s request he will be cremated and then burial will take place at a later date at the convenience of the family in Northumberland Memorial Park, Stonington.
