NEW Columbia - Mae Elizabeth (Fox) Keefer, 86, passed away Friday, August 31, 2012 at the Evangelical Community Hospital Emergency Room. She was born February 8, 1926 in Milton the daughter of Horace and Mae (Gray) Fox. Mae was married to Dale W. Keefer who died in 1991. She retired in 1988 after a 40-year career in nursing – more than 37 of those years at Evangelical Community Hospital. A graduate of Milton High School and the Williamsport Hospital School of Nursing, she completed her clinical training in the World War II Cadet Nurse Corps at Mount Alto Veterans Hospital Washington D.C. Following initial service as a general duty nurse in Williamsport, Mrs. Keefer began general duty nursing at Evangelical’s original location, which was located across the highway from the current hospital. She was promoted to second shift supervisor just two weeks after the opening of the new hospital in 1953. In 1970, she was named Director of Nursing. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church. She enjoyed playing cards and was an avid Philly’s fan. Surviving are one son Dennis (Karin) Keefer of Watsontown and a daughter April Mullen whom she resided with. Four grandchildren Jennifer, Aaron, Nathan and Sarah also a great-granddaughter Laylah. Three sisters Eleanor Springer of Wilmington, DE, Pat Williams of Downingtown and Helen Scholl of Shamokin Dam. The funeral service will be held 11:00 am Thursday, September 6, 2012 at Christ Lutheran Church, 1125 Mahoning Street, Milton with the Pastor Pat Pittsnogle officiating. There will be a public viewing one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions can be made to the Mae Keefer Nursing Scholarship Fund, One Hospital Drive, Lewisburg, PA 17837.
