YORK- Mack A. Newton, Jr., 91, died on Monday, January 22, 2018 at York Hospital, surrounded by family. He was the husband of Betty L. (Lentz) Schmitt Newton. The couple planned to celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary on February 14. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 27, 2018 at St. Paul’s Wolf’s Church Cemetery, 4501 Wolfs Church Rd., York with his pastor, the Reverend Robert A. Vizthum officiating and a flag folding ceremony presented by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Rd., York is in charge of arrangements. Born on April 8, 1926 in Hickory, NC, he was the son of the late Mack A. and Emma Marie (Hallyburton) Newton, Sr. Mack worked for various companies over the years as a dairy inspector and retired from Land O Lakes. Mr. Newton served our country for two years in the U.S. Navy during WWII on the USS Moore and USS Saugus in the Pacific and North Atlantic Theaters. He made contributions to the Destroyer Escort Historical Museum for the preservation of these historic ships. Mr. Newton was a member of Messiah U.M. Church. He enjoyed collecting cars and trains, boating, photography and loved to travel. Along with his wife, Betty, Mack is survived by two sons, Stephen A. Newton and wife, Angel of Kingsport, TN and Kevin A. Newton and wife, Judy of York; 14 grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Lynn Ellen Johnson; and sister, Nancy Newton. Memorial contributions may be made to Messiah U.M. Church, 1300 N. Beaver St., York, PA 17404
