Mabel A. deSouza was born on November 15, 1942, in Bombay, India. She was the youngest of 4 children born to the late Bernard and Julia Dias. Mabel attended school at Canossa Convent, receiving the Catholic education which served as the foundation of her lifelong religious faith. After high school, she worked as a business partner to numerous senior level executives at Philips, distinguishing herself with her organizational skills, work ethic, intellectual curiosity, and business acumen. At Philips, she met the love of her life, Daniel deSouza, who would be her husband for 47 years. Their union was blessed with their son Nikhil whom they showered with love, affection, and instilled a deep love of learning, imbuing him with a strong religious and moral compass.
After moving to the United States as a family to support their son’s educational ambitions, Mabel worked as a business partner to senior level executives at Buchart Horn, retiring in 2013 after 20+ years of service. Upon retirement, Mabel continued her active lifestyle, enjoying cultural excursions to Europe, Asia and the Americas. A lifelong lover of philately and numismatics, she built an impressive collection of stamps and coins, spending hours poring over and cataloging her finds. She was an avid reader, loved gardening and was adept at technology, eager to adopt new innovations (and the latest gadgets), including social media (which she used to “stalk” her son and daughter-in-law).
Mabel’s life was one of service and action emphasized by her living her faith daily through her generosity and her deep and enduring love of family and friends. She was beloved by everyone she met, whose lives she touched. She paired her love with an acerbic and incisive wit, a mischievous sense of humor and a boundless wellspring of energy, always finding ways to impact the lives of others. As she valiantly battled cancer, she lamented her lack of energy yet somehow still accomplished more in a day than most do in a week.
Mabel is survived by her husband, Daniel, her son Nikhil, and her daughter Katia. She is survived by her 2 sisters, Gladys (Tony) deSouza and Blanche Mendanha, her uncle Agnelo Remedios and countless nieces and nephews.
