RED LION – Luther Junior “JR” Markel, 81, passed away Wednesday, February 4, 2015 at Dallastown Nursing Center. He was the husband of the late Sarah J. (Cook) Markel whom passed away on Jan. 6, 2015 and the late Helen R. (Barshinger) Markel. A celebration of life tribute service for close friends and family will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, February 7, 2015 at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, 900 Pleasant Grove Rd., Red Lion with his pastor, The Rev. Samantha N. McElwee officiating. A viewing will be held from 1-2:00 PM Saturday at the Church. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Cemetery. Life Tributes by Olewiler & Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 35 Gotham Place, Red Lion, is in charge of arrangements which are incomplete. Born March 10, 1933 in York a son of the late Luther and Beulah A. (Miller) Markel, he was a graduate of Red Lion Area High School. Mr. Markel was a machinist at the former Borg Warner and York International, retiring in 1997. He was a member of Pleasant Grove U.M. Church and enjoyed bowling at Lion Bowling Center. He was a US Army veteran of the Korean War. Mr. Markel is survived by a son, Dirk E. Markel of York; a stepdaughter, Sally J. and husband David Sears of York; a granddaughter, Erin N. and husband Christopher Doemland of York; a great granddaughter, Amelia Doemland; a sister, Audrey King of Melbourne, FL; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Wade Markel; and two brothers, Elmer W. “Bud” Markel, Sr. and Quenton J. Markel. Memorial contributions may be made to Pleasant Grove U.M. Church, 900 Pleasant Grove Rd., Red Lion, PA 17356.
