YORK- LeRoy A. "Gix" Slenker, 94 of York Township, died Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at York Hospital. He was the husband of the late Grace E. (Gladfelter) Slenker. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, May 2, 2011 at Christ United Methodist Church, 200 N. Main Street in Jacobus. Viewings will be from 6-8 p.m. on Sunday at Life Tributes by Olewiler & Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc. 35 Gotham Place in Red Lion and 12:30-1:30 p.m. on Monday at the church. Burial will be in Christ United Methodist Cemetery in Jacobus with full military honors by York County Veterans Honor Guard. Mr. Slenker was born in York Township on January 19, 1917, a son of the late Reuben Henry and Elsie Jane (Hengst) Slenker. He worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad for 27 years and then for Allis Chalmers for 11 years. Mr. Slenker was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Jacobus and Goodwill Fire Company # 1 in York Township. He was one of the Founding participants of York County Horseshoe Pitching League, a Charter Committee member of Boy Scout Troop #17, and a Charter member of Happy Hollow Hunting Camp in Potter County. He was an avid farmer, hunter, camper, and enjoyed family gatherings. He served in the Medical Corps. in England in the US Army in WWII. He received the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, and American Theater Campaign Ribbon. Mr. Slenker leaves two sons, Rodney L. Slenker and his wife Nina of Red Lion and Gerald L. "Smoke" Slenker and his wife Kathie of York Township; four grandchildren, Laurie A. Stauffer, Jeffrey L. Slenker, Beth A. Helsel, and Melissa J. Waltersdorff; ten great grandchildren, Andrew, Elena, Peter, and Thomas Stauffer, Mize and Finley Slenker, Allison and Jenna Helsel, and Nathan and Matthew Waltersdorff; a sister, Helen Shepp of Dallastown, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Mervin, Elwood, and Carroll Slenker; and three sisters, Verna Eisenbaugh, Margaret Bupp, and Anna Mae Krebs. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Christ United Methodist Church, 200 N. Main Street, Jacobus, PA 17407 or Goodwill Fire Company # 1, Station 19, 2318 South Queen Street, York, PA 17402.
