DOVER - Leonard D. Kimmel, 86, died January 17, 2007 at Memorial Hospital in York. He was the loving husband of the late Mildred (Ahlborn) Kimmel for 59 years, until she passed away June 29, 2003. Viewing will be from 3 to 4 p.m. Saturday January 20, 2006 at Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Road in York. Funeral Service will immediately follow at 4p.m.at the funeral chapel, with Bruce N. Kovalchick officiating. Full Military Honors will be presented by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. Mr. Kimmel was born March 22, 1920 in South Middleton Township. He was the son of the late William D. and Lillie M. (Weaver) Kimmel. Mr. Kimmel was employed at Memorial Hospital for 19 years as the Vice President of Engineering and Maintenance until his retirement in 1985. He was a WWII United States Army Veteran serving from 1942 to 1945. Technical Sgt. Leonard Kimmel received the Bronze Star Medal while he was serving with the U.S. Army in Europe during WW II. 60 years later, Leonard was awarded a second Bronze Star with the Oak Leaf Cluster, which was presented to him by his son this past November. These awards were treasured greatly by Mr. Kimmel. Mr. Kimmel was a former member of the National Rifle Association and the Dover Fish and Game Association, in which he also served as the Treasurer. He was the former Hunting and Safety Instructor for the PA Game Commission. He was also active in the Boy Scouts of America throughout his life. Mr. Kimmel is survived by a son, William K. Kimmel and his wife Karen L. of Dover, a daughter, Jane Brown and her husband James of New Oxford, seven grandchildren; Beth, Ben, Bria, Bekki, Scott, Nathan, and Lee, five great grandchildren, and a brother, Harold Kimmel of Boiling Springs. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the loving and caring employees of Providence Place, Dover, PA may be made to the Leonard D. Kimmel Memorial Fund in care of Community Banks, 3421 Carlisle Road, Dover, PA 17315.
