WELLSBURG, NY - The pleasures of earth cannot be compared to the joys of Heaven as Leonard C. Morgan departed to go there on December 4, 2012. Leonard was born November 11, 1918 and lived in the Elmira area for most of his life. He follows his adopted daughter, Rosemary (Robert) Hovis and his sister Henrietta Carpenter. Leonard married the former Delores Jilson on October 21, 1967 and they celebrated 45 years together. He is survived by his loving wife Delores (Jilson) Morgan of the Town of Ashland, his adopted son, David Morgan of Terrell, TX, 8 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren, nieces, Jeannie (Tom) Preset and Wendy (Dave) Woodard of Campbell, and in-laws, Mary (Fred) Daniels, David Jilson and Don (Bev) Jilson. Leonard proudly served in the US Army during WW II from March 1941 to September 1945. He fought in battles in Algeria, French Morocco, Rhineland, Romearno, Sicily, Southern France, Tunisia and traveled some with General George Patton. Leonard was a 40 year employee with Corning Glass as a supervisor at the main plant and Horseheads Holding Point. He received his 75 year pin in 2009. He also worked for the Chemung County Transit for over 30 years. He was a life member of the Corning Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 524, Elmira Heights American Legion Post 154 and the First Baptist Church of Horseheads. Retiring from Corning in 1975 along with 13 other supervisors they met every Thursday at the Central Restaurant in Painted Post, Leonard was the last of the group. He enjoyed his Saturday morning breakfast with Robert and Steven Hovis. If God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. John 4:1 His special friends, Sue Ridall, Angie Leshick, Pat Brown, Shawn White and Mike Steele from Chemung Transit, Mary Gidney from the Elmira Bus Co., Harry Stabler of Shafer’s Bus Co., Pastor Aldrich, Ken & Alberta Andrus, Ed & Brenda Campbell, Ken & Pat Seager, Harry & Pat Schulz, Ray & Gerry Patrick, Jane Moss and the church huggers, Becky & Debbie Janowski, special neighbors Randy Beach & Family and Mike Thomas & family. Family and friends are invited to call Sunday, December 9, 2012 from 3 to 5 PM at the First Baptist Church of Horseheads, 2293 Grand Central Avenue, Horseheads, NY. Leonard’s funeral service will be held at the conclusion of calling hours at 5 PM with Pastor Sydney Aldrich and Pastor Robert Finch officiating with full military honors to follow. Music will be by singers Sue Schoeffler, Bonnie Strope and Larry Morgan. Interment will be at the convenience of the family in Ashland Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Roberts Funeral Home, Inc. 279 Main Street, Wellsburg, NY. The family would like to thank First Care Hospice nurses Lorie Mosteller and Paulette and the 2nd Floor D at St. Joseph’s Hospital for the love and care given to Leonard. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Horseheads Christian School, 2293 Grand Central Ave. Horseheads, NY 14845 or to the Twin Tiers Christian Academy, 640 Main Street, Breesport, NY 14816.
