Leona J. (Ruppert) Markel

YORK – Leona J. (Ruppert) Markel, 81, passed away Thursday, November 26, 2015 at York Hospital. She was the wife of the late Richard E. Markel. A celebration of life tribute service will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, December 3, 2015 at Salem Lutheran Church, 99 York Road, Jacobus with her pastor, The Rev. Tina Minnich officiating. A viewing will be held from 10-11:00 AM Thursday at the Church. Burial will be in Salem Lutheran Cemetery. Born February 10, 1934 in Lower Windsor Twp., a daughter of the late Earl Ruppert and Mabel (Sipe) Gross, she was a 1952 graduate of East Berlin High School. Mrs. Markel had worked at the former AMP, Inc. She was a member of Salem Lutheran Church, and loved to travel, enjoyed making ceramics, and going to family football, wrestling, and basketball sporting events. Being a basketball player on the East Berlin High School girl’s basketball team, she gave her nieces and nephews pointers on how to improve their basketball game. Mrs. Markel is survived by a son, Wayne R. Markel of Windsor; a stepson, Quay L. and wife Linda Markel of Dallastown; a grandson, Zachary Markel; two step grandchildren, Scott Markel and Sarah Lockard; two step great grandchildren; two sisters, Louise M. and husband Dale K. Wolfe of East Berlin and Earline L. and husband Frank Jones of York; a half-sister, Robin L. and husband John Wendt of York; eight nieces and nephews; and ten great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a stepson, Kenneth L. Markel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to York Cancer Patient Help Fund, c/o York Health Foundation, 50 N.
