TROY- Leo E. Salmon Sr., affectionately known by many as “Pop”, age 90, of 8156, Rt. 6, Troy, PA passed away on Nov. 5th at the Troy Hospital surround by his loved ones. He was born on Fulton Ave., Jersey City, New Jersey on May 27, 1922, the son of Dr. Edward H. and Theresa Salmon. Leo enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 and attained the enlisted rank of Aviation Machinist Mate, 2nd class. After training, he served on the USS Savo Island (aircraft carrier). On deployment to the South Pacific, Leo was transferred to the Naval Air Station in Pearl Harbor where he served for the remainder of the war. He was honorably discharged in 1946. Leo was awarded the Good Conduct Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon, and the Victory Ribbon for his dedicated service. He married Agnes Marie Stickle Salmon on July 17, 1949.They were happily married for 55 years until her unexpected death in 2003. Leo became a Hudson County police officer in New Jersey after the war and retired in 1977 after 27 years of dedicated public service. He and his family owned and operated a thriving poultry business as well as a large fruits and vegetable stand in Boonton, New Jersey before relocating to Troy, PA in 1980. Leo has enjoyed restoring the old Case/Pomeroy farm to its former glory. He was active in raising black angus beef cattle, gardening, mowing lawn, fishing, feeding the birds, and most importantly, raising his two grandchildren. Leo found great pride and joy in both his grandchildren, Scott and Caitlin Pratt. He traveled to many soccer and softball games in the extreme heat and freezing cold as well as attending many school functions. He relished in his granddaughter’s wonderful cooking and loved to watch her “smack the ball out of the park!” whether it be a softball or soccer ball. Leo also was an enormous supporter of his grandson Scott’s desire to establish his maple syrup business. At an early age, Pop taught Scott the family tradition of tapping and the two will share this special bond forever. He also was extremely fond of Scott’s girlfriend, Maggie Bride who he loving referred to as” Margaret” and was very proud of Kate’s boyfriend, Chance Wright. He also was fond of Scott’s childhood friend, Ike Allen. He is survived by his son, Leo Edward Salmon of Troy, his daughter, Claire Pratt and son-in-law, Wayne Pratt of Troy, his daughter, Kathleen Aste of New Jersey, his sister, Joan Morrison of Maryland and five grandchildren. According to his final wishes, a small private graveside burial will take place on Friday, Nov. 9, 2012 at the Glenwood Cemetery at 1pm so he can be laid to rest alongside his beloved wife.
