YORK – Lee Granville Driscoll, 88, of Manchester Twp., died on Wednesday night, March 28, 2012 at York Hospital. Mr. Driscoll was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, the son of the late Leo G. and Nina (Franzman) Driscoll. He came to Pennsylvania in January 1938. During his high school years he was active on the swimming team at the YMCA. He graduated from York Catholic High School in 1941. He joined the US Navy in 1942 and served as a Torpedoman aboard the destroyer, USS Daly DD519 taking part in 28 invasions in the Pacific during World War II, where he earned the Purple Heart at Okinawa, and the Navy Commendation Medal at the Battle of Surigao Straits in the Philippines. His Asiatic Pacific Medal has one silver and three bronze stars. He was discharged on January 11, 1946. Lee is survived by his wife, Thelma (Enterline) Driscoll; a sister, Jeanne Rieker of Lancaster, PA; and several nieces. His first wife, Gail (Willis) Driscoll and sister, Rosemary Smith predeceased him. Lee retired after 28 years with Caterpillar, Inc. in 1982 as a supervisor in the Parts Dept. He held an Extra Class Ham Radio License (N3LD). He was a life member of VFW Post 7045, a life member of the DAV, and a life member of Hawks Gunning Club. He held a membership in the York Amateur Radio Club and the VHF Club of York for many years. He was a member of Chapter 3400 AARP and the Caterpillar York Retirees Club (CYRC). Le was also past Chef De Garre of La Societe des Quarante Hommes et Huit Chevaux (better known as the Forty & Eight, an independent fraternal organization of US Veterans), and past commander of The Military Order of Purple Heart, Chapter 390. He attended St. James Lutheran Church in West York. His pastor, the Rev. Brenda J. Ferree will conduct a memorial service at Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Road, York on Monday, April 2, 2012 at 2:00 PM. A visitation will be held from 1-2:00 PM Monday at the Funeral Chapel. Full military rites will be provided by York County Veterans Honor Guard immediately prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Memorial Fund of St. James Lutheran Church, 25 North Adams Street, York, PA 17404-5301.
