DOVER – Lawrence R. McCallister, 87, passed away Sunday, November 1, 2015 at York Hospital. He was the husband of Doris L. (Bailey) McCallister to whom he was married for 61 years on October 9th. A celebration of life tribute service will be held at 10:00 AM Thursday, November 5, 2015 at Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Road, York with Rev. Eva O’Diam officiating. Viewings will be held from 6-8:00 PM Wednesday and 9-10:00 AM Thursday at the Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Susquehanna Memorial Gardens with full military rites provided by York County Veterans Honor Guard. Born June 17, 1928 in Wheeling, WV; a son of the late John R. and Kathleen M. (Leech) McCallister, he retired as a Master Sergeant from the US Army after 20 years of service and two tours of duty during The Korean War. Mac then began his second career with the USPS where he retired after 23 years of service. Mr. McCallister was a member of Dover UCC where he was active member and served on numerous boards and sang in the Church choir. He was a member of York Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Shiloh American Legion, West York VFW, Viking A.A., and served as a Dover Twp. Fire Policeman. Mac’s hobbies included reading, golfing, watching and coaching baseball, and supporting the NY Yankees. During his children’s youth he could often be found volunteering his time at school activities and coaching baseball teams. Mac enjoyed NASCAR, hunting and most importantly spending time with his grandchildren. In addition to his wife, Mr. McCallister is survived by a daughter, Lesley Patricia Weinstein and her husband Larry of Lancaster; a son, Timothy R. and wife Jennifer L. McCallister of Gettysburg; three grandchildren, Wesley and Whitney Weinstein and Jacob McCallister; and a great granddaughter, Bailey Weinstein. He was preceded in death by three sisters.
