York—LaFair A. “Jimmy” Horton, 93, died Monday, October 17, 2011 at Rest Haven Nursing Home. He was the husband of the late Catherine L. (McCloud) Horton. A Celebration of Life Service will be held 11 A.M., Saturday, October 22, 2011 at Small Memorial AME Zion Church, 401 South Queen Street, York, with Pastor Edith Jones officiating. A viewing will be from 9-11 A.M., Saturday, at church. Burial will be held in Lebanon Cemetery with full military honors provided by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Rd, York, is in charge of arrangements. Born December 3, 1917 in Salisbury, North Carolina, he was a son of the late Casey and Larraine Horton. His family moved to Winston Salem, NC where he was raised and attended school. LaFair’s family included 7 sisters, 3 brothers and membership in the Saint Andrew AME Church in Winston Salem. He was a United States Army Veteran of World War II and was honorably discharged on February 11, 1946 with the rank of Staff Sgt. Within a month he and his loving wife Catherine moved to York and united with Small Memorial AME Zion Church. LaFair became a member of the Usher board in 1947 during the pastorate of the Rev. William B. Baker and has served continuously ever since. He was also a member of the trustee board since 1950 and a member of the culinary committee. LaFair was employed in the maintenance department with the York City Housing Authority for 20 years. He previously served as head chef for the former Colonial Hotel and operated his own catering service. Mr. Horton is survived by a step-son, Connie J. “CJ” Johnson Horton of Detroit, Mich, four sisters, Vera Smallwood, Christine Michael, Ernestine Lawery and husband Ravernal “Bubba”, and Florine Hampton all of York; sister-in-law, Eula Horton of Maryland; special cousin, James Horton of York and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Lewis, Howard and Detroit Horton; and four sisters, Lola Mae Jolly, Hattie Mae Studyvance, Catherine Jackson, and Grace Stokes. Memorial contributions may be made to Small Memorial AME Zion Church, Kitchen Committee, 401 South Queen Street, York, Pa 17403.
