DOVER- Kenneth L. Nelson, 78, died Saturday, May 23, 2009 at his residence. He was the loving husband of Rita C. Nelson, who passed away June 18, 2001. A Celebration of Life Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, May 28, 2009 at Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, 1551 Kenneth Rd., York. A viewing will be from 9-11 a.m. on Thursday. Pastor Dan Warner of Antioch 1611 Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Susquehanna Memorial Gardens Cemetery following the service. Mr. Nelson was born March 31, 1931 in Dillsburg, Pa. He retired in 1996 from Keystone Weaving Mills Company as a loom mechanic after 47 years. In addition, Kenneth drove school bus for the West York School District for 37 years. He was recognized for being the longest working school bus driver. He retired from Reliance Motor Coach in October of 2008. Kenneth served our country in the US Army during the Korean War. He was a member of the East Berlin VFW Post 8896 along with the West York VFW Post # 8951. Mr. Nelson leaves a son, Todd E. Nelson and his wife Melissa of Manchester; two daughters, Christine A. Sheads and her husband Michael of East Berlin and Beth Ann Smyser of York; three step grand children, Lisa S. Sheads, David M. Sheads, and Ryan M. Smyser; one step great grandchild, Alijah E. Morris; two brothers, Eugene P. Nelson of Trout Run, PA and Donald J. Nelson of Dunedin, FL; and one sister, Audrey V. Romito and of Biglerville, PA. Preceding him in death was a brother, Warren L. Nelson of Mercer, PA. Memorial contributions may be made to the York County Veterans Honor Guard, P.O. Box 712, Mt. Wolf, Pa 17347 and St. Jude Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
