YORK - Kenneth L. Markel, 76, passed away Monday, February 22, 2010 at Rest Haven - York. He was the husband of Patricia A. (Smith) Markel to whom he was married for 49 years on April 22, 2009. A celebration of life tribute service will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, February 26, 2010 at Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Road, York with Certified Celebrant, Betty Frey officiating at the service. Viewings will be held from 7-9:00 PM Thursday and 9-10:00 AM Friday at the Funeral Chapel. The burial will be held at 2:00 PM Friday at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, with full military rites. Born November 20, 1933 in York a son of the late Lester and Beatrice S. (Linton) Markel, he retired from the PA State Police in 1984 as Sergeant in Charge of the Gettysburg barracks, after 28 yrs. of service. Following his retirement from the State Police, Mr. Markel served as a deputy and then Sheriff of York County from 1992-1996. He was a member of PA Sheriff's Assoc.; Retired State Police Assoc. of PA; life member of Viking Athletic Assoc., Hellam VFW Post 7045, and Muncy American Legion Post 268 where he also served as a past commander; Korean War Veterans Assoc; and the Forty and Eight. Mr. Markel was a former York Township Commissioner and enjoyed hunting. He was a 32nd degree mason and member of F&AM Riverside Lodge 503, Wrightsville with additional Masonic affiliations being Tall Cedars of Lebanon and Harrisburg Consistory. Mr. Markel was a US Navy, Marine Corps Detachment veteran of the Korean War. In addition to his wife, Mr. Markel is survived by two god children, Matthew and Christian Fetrow; a brother, William L. and wife Lois Markel of York; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Joan G. Roche.
