York—Karl V. Schmittle Sr., 86, passed away Wednesday, June 15, 2011, surround by his family at York Hospital. He was the husband of M. Lucille (Montgomery) Schmittle to whom he was married for 63 years. A celebration of life tribute will be private at the convenience of the family. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Rd, York is in charge of arrangements. Born January 22, 1925 in Orbisonia, he was a son of the late Elmer and Anna (Bucher) Schmittle. He proudly served in the United States Navy. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War, achieving the rank of Commander. He graduated from Swarthmore College, earning his degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was a retiree of Johnson Controls. A member of First Presbyterian Church in York, where he had served as an elder and head usher. Karl enjoyed a wide variety of hobbies. Trout fishing was one of his favorites. He also loved gardening and baking sour dough bread. In addition to his wife, Mr. Schmittle is also survived by four children, Karen B. Schaffer of York, Anne L. Cousar of Lancaster, Kathy L. Raber of New Oxford and Karl V. Schmittle of York, 12 grandchildren, one half sister and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by 1 brother and 1 sister. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.
