Karl Gustav Schmidt, Sr.

STEWARTSTOWN-Karl Gustav Schmidt, Sr., 76, died Thursday, October 22, 2009 at Heath South Rehabilitation Hospital of York. He was the loving husband of Doris M. (Kundratic) Schmidt to whom he was married to for 52 years. A celebration of life service will be held 10:00 A.M., Friday, October 30, 2009 at Life Tributes by Olewiler and Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 35 Gotham Place, Red Lion, with the Rev. David Haynes-Weller officiating. Viewings will be held 5-7 P.M. Thursday, October 29, 2009 and 9-10 AM Friday, October 30, 2009. Burial will be held in Mt. Rose Cemetery with full military rights provided by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. Mr. Schmidt was born on December 23, 1932, in Boston, MA, a son of the late Otto Ernest and Emilie Marie (Maih�) Schmidt. He was a former employee for Caterpillar, Inc for 22 years until his retirement in 1996. Mr. Schmidt was a U.S. Army veteran, serving his country during the Korean War. During his enlistment he received a National Defense Service Medal, a Good Conduct Medal, and an Army Occupation medal. Mr. Schmidt enjoyed operating his radio controlled airplanes and sailboats, and was an avid collector of model trains; having over 100 of them. He spent many hours tending to his vegetable gardens over the years. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Robert A. Schmidt and wife, Janice of Spring Grove, Karl G. Schmidt, Jr. of Jacobus, and Thomas E. Schmidt of NC; a daughter Diane E. Greely and husband, Roger of Stewartstown; six grandchildren; one great grandson; and two nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister Marie B. Miller and a nephew. Memorial contributions may be made to Disabled American Veterans, P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH, 45250.
