York—Karl G. “Papaw” Petry, 79, of Longstown Village, passed away Thursday, May 16, 2013, at York Hospital. He had the pleasure of being married to Delores R. (Lau) Petry for 52 years, until her passing on October 21, 2005. Following cremation, a Memorial Service will be held at 2 PM, Thursday at the Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Road, York. Officiating the service will be Pastor Deborah Port of Longstown United Methodist Church. Burial will be private in Roth’s Reformed Cemetery in Spring Grove, PA. Mr. Petry was born in West York on March 25, 1934, a son of the late Charles and Anna Willamina (Shire) Petry. He spent over 40 years working in the retail management industry, most notably for the W. T. Grants Company. He was a 1952 graduate of West York High School, where he was the captain and leading scorer of the basketball team. He was a United States Army Veteran of the Korean War and was a 1956 graduate of (at the time) York Junior College. He was a devoted husband and father, and a hard-working, conscientious provider for his family; but his life truly changed when he became “Papaw”, thanks to the arrival of Dana Petry, his first grandchild. His family meant the world to him. He was very proud of his sons, grandchildren, and recent great-grandchildren, Ava and Camden. Elizabeth Mann has been his constant companion for the last seven years. Mr. Petry leaves three sons, Shane G. Petry and wife, Suzanne of York, Troy D. Petry of York, and Parrish S. Petry and wife, Kristi of Windsor; and seven grandchildren, Dana, Ben, Chance, Alexis, Nathan, Nicholas, and Taylor Petry, as well as great-grandchildren, Ava and Camden Petry. He was preceded in death by his brother, Carson Petry, and his sister, Lona Duke. Memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the Longstown United Methodist Church, 2975 Carol Road, York, PA 17402.
