Kamala Bhattacharjee

Mrs. Kamala Bhattacharjee entered eternal peace on Tuesday, February 5th 2013, with her family by her side in York, Pennsylvania. Her tribute services will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday February 9th at Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Road, York. Mrs. Bhattacharjee was born on October 16, 1924 in Rajshahi, Bangladesh to Ayurvedic physician Jyotish Saraswati and Indubala Saraswati. She completed her education in Bangladesh and subsequently married Dr. Tripuresh Bhattacharjee. They raised two children, Syamal and Kumkum. In the 1940's, she endured the swift and painful escape from their estate in Bangladesh to an unknown future in India. A true pioneer in women's rights, Mrs. Bhattacharjee worked full time while raising two children in a country where women's opportunities to work were not yet mature. While her husband, a military physician, was stationed in distant cities for 10 years, she was determined to raise their kids in excellent schools with outstanding moral principles. She was a role model for many women and mothers, then and now. As the family matriarch, she remained in India until her departure to the States in the 1980's. She had a successful 30 year stay in the United States, sharing her time equally between her children. She endured many challenges, such as the passing of her daughter in 2009 and celebrations, such as the marriage of three of her grandkids and the birth of four great grandkids. She was an extremely intelligent woman, savvy in every respect, understanding that conflict is never a solution to life's challenges. Mrs. Bhattacharjee was a servant of God. Every action she made, every word she said reflected her understanding of the path to spiritual freedom. She cherished the sounds of Kirtans every morning and read devotional books every night before her evening slumber. She reminded all that, ultimately, one must aspire to be with God. She was truly an amazing, inspiring woman whose life was filled with love and who is now basking in the glory of spiritual bliss. Mrs. Kamala Bhattacharjee is survived by her spouse, 1 son and daughter-in-law, 1 son-in-law, 4 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren.
