Joyce W. (Werkema) Whitney

York—Joyce W. (Werkema) Whitney, 89, died Thursday, May 2, 2013 at York Hosptial. She was the wife of the late Truxtun S. Whitney. A Celebration of Life Service will be 11 AM, Thursday, June 20, 2013 at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saint, 2100 Hollywood Dr., York. Burial will be held 11 AM, Wednesday, June 19, 2013 in Arlington National Cemetery. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Rd, York is in charge of arrangements. She was born June 6, 1923 in Grand Rapids, MI, a daughter of the late Thomas and Ada (Morsink) Werkema. She was employed for several years as an elementary school librarian. She was a member of the choir at Country Meadows of Trolley Rd and loved word search puzzles. For over 30 years, Mrs. Whitney was a resident in the Dale City/Woodbridge, VA area and was an active member of her church community. Mrs. Whitney is survived by three children, Michael A. Whitney of North Augusta, SC, Linda K. Wirt of Hardy, VA and Barry B. Whitney and his wife, Cynthia of York; 7 grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren; 4 siblings, Thomas Werkema, Milton Werkema, Carol Nelson and Douglas Werkema and several nieces and nephews.
