MANCHESTER—Joseph Steven Ryan, 75, passed away surrounded by his loved ones Friday, August 11, 2023 at his residence in Conewago Township. He was the husband of Mary E. (Snyder) Ryan to whom he was married for 52 years.
A Celebration of Life Service will be 10:00AM, Wednesday, August 16, 2023 at Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Rd, York. Officiating the service will be Chaplain Margaret M. Stevens of Promedica Hospice. A viewing will be held from 9:00 – 10:00AM, Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be held 2:00PM, Wednesday in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.
Born August 06, 1948 in Troy, NY, he was the son of the late Joseph J. and Lillian C. (White) Ryan.
In addition to his wife, Steve is also survived by two daughters, Tammy Creamer and her husband, Ralph and Wendy Kenemore and her husband, Michael; one son, Joseph S. Ryan Jr.; four grandchildren, Bryan Creamer and his wife, Breanna; Michaela Noon and her wife Nicole, Michael (Mikee) Kenemore Jr., and Willow Kenemore; Great Granddaughter Braylee Creamer; his aunt, Evelyn Abbott; his rottweiler and loyal companion, Teddy and nieces and nephews.
He was employed as an assembler with Tekgard Inc., and Enviromental Control Systems.
Mr. Ryan devoted over two decades of his life to the United States Armed Forces. He was a United States Marine Corps Veteran of the Vietnam War and was awarded the Vietnam Gallantry Cross. Following his honorable discharge from the USMC, he served in the United States Army Reserves—12th Special Forces Group and ended his military career with the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, where he captained the pistol and rifle shooting team to two state championships.
His enthusiasm for competitive shooting continued outside of the military and he often competed at local gun clubs. Steve also dedicated 50 years to instructing both Fire Arms Safety and PA Hunter Safety Education. As a hunter safety instructor he taught multiple generations the importance of safe hunting practices and earned Instructor of Year.
An avid hunter and conservationist, he was also a member of the Izaak Walton League of America, Susquehanna Fish & Game, NRA and a NASCAR fan, especially Dale Earnhardt.
