Joseph Francis Zegarski

YORK – Joseph Francis Zegarski, 93, passed away peacefully Saturday, July 29, 2023 at his home after a long illness. He was the loving husband of the late Barbara M. (Minnich) Zegarski whom he married in August of 1957 and shared 63 wonderful years until her passing Nov. 4, 2020.

Born June 18, 1930 in Wilkes-Barre, PA; he was the only son of the late Frank Stanley and Stella (Sot) Zegarski. He was a 1948 graduate of Coughlin High School in Wilkes-Barre. Joseph then worked as an Asst. Manager at McCrory’s Five and Ten in Frederick, MD until he enlisted in the US Army in 1951 during the Korean War. He served three years and was stationed in Japan as an Army Medic. Upon his honorable discharge in 1954, Mr. Zegarski attended PA Hospital School of Nursing for Men in Philadelphia and graduated in 1958 with his RN degree. Joseph then graduated from Montgomery Hospital School of Anesthesia in 1961 as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist. He worked at York Hospital for 18 years, Hanover General Hospital for 14 years, and Memorial Hospital in York for 8 years until his retirement. Throughout his life, he would never say no when someone asked to help and loved starting up conversations with strangers. He had a soft spot for babies and dogs.

Joseph was a member of Christ Lutheran Church of Spry in his younger days, where he served on the church counsel. His favorite thing in life was going hunting at Camp 250, located in Coudersport, Potter County. He was a founding, lifetime member, and lived for his next Camp 250 trip. He simply retired early when he was denied his yearly vacation during deer season. Mr. Zegarski was a jack of all trades who often worked two jobs and was more than willing to grab his toolbox any time day or night to help anyone in need. He loved taking family vacations along the east coast, driving his wood grain station wagon pulling a camping trailer, singing along the way. He loved to shop anywhere, anytime.

Mr. Zegarski is survived by a daughter, Victoria A. and husband Joel L. Seeger of York; a son, David J. and wife Carol Zegarski of Fairfield, PA.; two grandchildren, Jill and husband Tyler Small of Dover and Randy and wife Amanda Sciangula of Virginia Beach, VA. He leaves two step-grandchildren, Tabitha Spahr-Sailor and Andrew McGlaughlin; and a sister, Charlotte Zajaczkowski of Wilkes-Barre. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Jean Ceklosky and Helen Luzack.

There will be no service as he requested. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Rd, York is in charge of arrangements. The family would like to thank Jazmine, Whitney, Nylaya and Victoria, the primary caretakers of his beloved home nursing staff for their dedication and compassion over the years. He would never have been able to remain in his home had it not been for their loving care.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Char-Wills German Shepherd Rescue, PO Box 132, New Ringgold, PA 17960 or at www.charwillsrescue.com, or any animal rescue.
