AVOCA-Joseph F. Tigue, 70, of 931 Main Street, Avoca, died Tuesday, January 16, 2007 at Mercy Hospital, Scranton. His wife is the former Maryann Rava of Duryea. Born on May 14, 1936 in Avoca, he was the son of the late Joseph and Marion Walsh Tigue. He was a graduate of St. John's High School, Pittston and attended the University of Scranton. He served our country for three years in the United States Marine Corps. Prior to his retirement, he was employed out of the Pittston office of the United States Postal Service for 37 years, wherehe was a member of the Million Mile Club. Most recently he worked at SS. Peter and Paul Church, Avoca. He was a member of St. Mary's Church, Avoca. He was a life member of both the American Legion Post 607, Avoca and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8335, Avoca; a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and past president of the Avoca Lions Club, where he spearheaded the annual Christmas lighting project for the town of Avoca as well as the monthly food drive for the homebound and needy. He was an avid gardener who also volunteered his time making pierogies with the gang at SS. Peter and Paul Church. He was a former member of the West Side Club and the Hanover Township Notre Dame Club. He was a loving and caring husband and father who took great pride in the accomplishments of his children. Known by his family, friends and colleagues as a kind and generous person, he never said "No" to anyone needing his help. His memory will live forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. Surviving in addition to his wife of 39 years, the former Maryann Rava, are his four sons, Joseph of Raleigh, NC; Michael of Dorchester, Mass and twin sons, Kevin and John, at home; a sister, Maureen Vesey of King of Prussia; sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. His brothers, John and William Tigue preceded him in death. The funeral will be Saturday at 9:30 a.m. from the Kniffen O'Malley Funeral Home, Inc., 728 Main St., Avoca, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Avoca. Concelebrating will be The Reverend Joseph Elston and The Reverend Mark Bochinski. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Avoca. Military Honors will be conducted by the United States Marine Corps Honor Guard. Friends may call Friday evening from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Avoca Lions Club Food Drive, c/o Treasurer James Haddock, 756 Main Street, Avoca, PA 18641.
