YORK Joseph Conrad Ward, 81, died at 11:34 a.m. Thursday, October 2, 2014 at the York Hospital. He was the husband of Barbara D. (Groce) Ward with whom he celebrated a 28th wedding anniversary on January 4, 2014. Following cremation, a graveside service with military honors will be held at Quantico National Cemetery, Triangle, VA. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, York is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Ward was born July 1, 1933 in Chicago, IL. He was the son of the late Lester W. and Emily (Paulda) Ward. For many years he served as the National Manager for the financial brand branch of Honeywell Information Systems in New York City. He later served as a computer analyst with both Digital Equipment Corporation and its successor company, Quantum in San Jose, CA before retiring as a computer analyst with PennDOT in the Motor Vehicle Department. Following his retirement he volunteered his time with the York Literacy Council and SCORE. Mr. Ward was of the Catholic faith. He was an avid reader and a scholar of the Civil War. He was a graduate of Franklin Pierce College where he earned his Bachelors of Science degree, Cambridge College where he earned his Masters of Education, and Southern New Hampshire College where he received his Master’s in Business Administration. He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War and received the Korean Service Medal with four stars. He was a life member of both the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He enjoyed both athletic and motor sports and became a passionate Boston Red Sox fan while living in New England. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Gregory and Christina Ward of Mystic, CT; three daughters, Cynthia and Daniel Goode of Yardley, Pamela Ward-Demo of Stuttgart, Germany and Patricia and Edward Pietrzak of Fairfax, VA; six grandchildren, Jennifer, Emily, Robin, Griffin, Nicholas, and Genieve; and his brother, Lawrence and Ann Ward of Alexandria, VA . He was preceded in death by a son, Mark Ward; a son-in-law, Steven Demo; and a sister, Donna Korokowski. Memorial contributions may be made to the National Museum of the Marine Corps, 18900 Jefferson Davis Hwy, Triangle, VA 22172.
