John Wen-Hsing Huang

Shrewsbury – John Wen-Hsing Huang, 83, passed away on Wednesday, June 10, 2020 at WellSpan York Hospital in York, Pennsylvania. Mr. Huang was born December 8, 1936, in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the National Cheng Kung University, he served for two years in the Taiwanese Armed Forces. After this, he emigrated from Taiwan to the United States where he studied at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, where he earned a Master of Science degree in Architectural Engineering. Mr. Huang practiced as a Professional Engineer in the Baltimore area his entire career, working for companies including RTKL Associates and Century Engineering, eventually staring his own firm, John Huang & Associates, in 1972. Some of his notable accomplishments include assisting with the design of the original Friendship Airport (now called BWI), designing several key bridges crossing the Jones Falls Expressway and the design of the Trident Submarine dry dock cover building at Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, Georgia – the largest such structure in the world, measuring 700 feet long and 100 feet wide. Even in retirement, Mr. Huang continued his passion for engineering, designing many shore erosion control projects around the Chesapeake Bay. Mr. Huang accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior when he was in high school in Taiwan and was baptized as Gushan Presbyterian Church in Kaohsiung. After finishing graduate school and moving to Baltimore, he was active in the International Christian Fellowship, where he met Jean Garber, a missionary nurse on extended leave in Baltimore, whom he married in 1968. John and Jean were very active in service to Jesus throughout their lives, including being involved in their local churches and also serving in ministries reaching out to Chinese students living in the Baltimore area. Mr. Huang was a strong believer in the freedoms afforded to United States citizens and helped his entire family, including his parents, two brothers and two sisters, to emigrate to the Unites States and become citizens. Mr. Huang was preceded in death by his wife, Jean. He is survived by his son, John, daughter-in-law, Son and grandchildren, Nicholas, Kimberly and Jack. He is also survived by his four beloved siblings: Ben Huang and his wife, Joyce, Amy Wang and her husband, Chi-Shing, Cindy Lln (and late husband, Tommy) and Joseph Huang and his wife, Mei-Hsing. A live, virtual ceremony celebrating his life will be held on Saturday, June 20th. The family asks that donations be made in lieu of flowers to the Kennedy’s Disease Association (https://www.kennedysdisease.org/get-involved/donate-now). John fought a long battle against this disease, for which a cure is still being sought.
