YORK - John W. Bupp, 91, died at 7:25 p.m. Sunday, April 4, 2010, at the York Lutheran Home at Sprenkle Dr. He was the husband of Dorothy H. (Stambaugh) Bupp who entered marriage as a war bride on April 10, 1944 in Westminster, MD. A service to celebrate Mr. Bupp's life will be 10 a.m. Thursday, April 8, 2010 at Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, 1551 Kenneth Rd., York with the Rev. Larry Knutson, transitional minister at Salem United Church of Christ, Dover, officiating. Burial with full military honors by the York County Veterans Honor Guard will be at Prospect Hill Cemetery. Viewing will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Mr. Bupp was born at home in York New Salem on September 10, 1918. He was the son of the late Noah M. and Emma J. (Shaffer) Bupp. He retired from the former Fulton, Mehring & Hauser, Co. in York in 1971 after 25 years of service as a truck driver. Additionally, John was a familiar face at the Yorktowne Hotel where he parked cars part time and full time for over 20 years and was recognized as Employee of the Month in June of 1998 as well as Employee of the Year for 1998. He had also been recognized as a valued supporter of the Good News Jail & Prison Ministry at their annual banquet. He was a past member of the American Legion Post #127, the Prince Athletic Association and the Local Union #430. He was also a member of Salem United Church of Christ, Dover. He was a US Army veteran of World War II serving from 1941 to 1945 and participated in operations in the Philippines, Okinawa, and main land Japan. He returned to the States upon the famed aircraft carrier, "Intrepid," where he received his only wartime injury. In addition to his wife of 66 years, he leaves his son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Carolyn Bupp of Dover; three grandchildren, Robert Bupp, Kristen May and Sherry Kent; a great granddaughter, Sophia May, with a second great grandbaby (Ron B. Kent) due next month; and a sister, Louise Roser of York. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Good News Jail & Prison Ministry, c/o Chaplain Ron Bupp, 3400 Concord Rd., York, PA 17402.
