YORK- John R. Clugston, 92, died Thursday, June 28, 2012 at Normandie Ridge. He was the husband of Shirley M. (Beury) Clugston. The couple celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary on December 4, 2011. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 3, 2012 at Calvary United Methodist Church, 11 North Richland Ave. in York. The Reverend Dr. Michael Koplitz and The Reverend Roland E. Garvin will be officiating at the service. Viewings will be from 6-8 p.m. on Monday at Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Rd. in York, with a Masonic Service by York Masonic Lodge#266 at 8p.m. and a viewing from 10-11a.m. on Tuesday at the Church. A time of gathering and meal will immediately follow the service at the Church. Graveside Committal Service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at Prospect Hill Cemetery with full military honors by York County Veterans Honor Guard. Mr. Clugston was born in Kingston on December 13, 1919, son of the late Russell A. and Jennie (Davies) Clugston. He was a 1937 Graduate of Northumberland High School. He entered the US Army October 1, 1941 and was discharged as a Staff Sergeant in the Air Force (US Army Air Corps.) on December 21, 1945. He attended Bucknell University for two years and then transferred to Bliss Electrical School, graduating in 1949. He started with Metropolitan Edison Company in Reading in 1949 and served them for 36 years, retiring in 1984 as Division Manager of the York Western Division. Mr. Clugston was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in York and an alternate Sunday school teacher. He was made a life member of Lions International & Devers Lions in 1986, where he also served as Trustee and was a charter member, and President twice. He was a member of the Met-Ed Company, York Area Retirees Association. His community activities included, Chairman of both: York Area Planning Commission and of the York City Planning Commission. He was a board member of the York Area Air Quality Standards Commission, served on the Board of Directors of the York Junior Achievement, the Easter Seal Society, was a board member of the United Way and Chairman of the United Way Campaign in 1977. He was Vice President of the York Area Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Manufacturers Association, Chairman of the York Industrial Development Authority and Vice Chairman of the York Industrial Development Cooperation. He was a board member of the Republican Men’s Club, Advisory Board of the York County Republican Club, Industrial Management Club, and a board member of the York Day Nursery & Kindergarten. He was named Volunteer of the Year by York Chamber of Commerce and delivered Meals on Wheels. He was a member of the York Lodge No. 266 Free & Accepted Masons, York County Shrine, Royal Arch Chapter No. 199, White Rose Scottish Rite Club of Harrisburg Consistory, York-Gethsemane Commander No. 21, Knights Templar, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Harrisburg, First Capital High Twelve Club No. 668, Tall Cedars of Lebanon, York Forest No. 30, and Hi-12 Club. He was also a member of the American Association of Retired Persons, American Legion Post 44, Northumberland, Pa., Manor Social Club, Hawk’s Gunning Club, and the Vikings Athletic Association. He enjoyed gardening, working with wood, creating many Nativity Mangers, crafts, and spending time with his grandchildren. Along with his wife, Mr. Clugston leaves a son, John L. Clugston and his wife Karen of Snellville, GA, a daughter, Jan C. Muthler and her husband Daniel of Jersey Shore, PA; two grandchildren, Joshua D. Clugston and Jason M. Clugston and his wife Shannon; a step grandson, D. Bryan Muthler and his wife Christine; two great grandchildren, Jack R. Clugston and Elin M. Clugston; two step great grandchildren, Nathaniel J. Muthler and Evelyn N. Muthler; sisters-in-law, Myrtle Clugston and Virginia Beury Gallo and her husband Joseph, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother Russell A. Clugston and a sister-in-law, Betty Beury Stahl and her husband Roland. Memorial Contributions may be made to Calvary United Methodist Church, 11 N. Richland Ave., York, PA 17404.
