YORK--John Philip Minnich, 83, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, February 7, 2023. He was born on May 3, 1939 to the late John B. and Dorothy (Booz) Minnich. John graduated William Penn High School in 1957. John played the clarinet in the York High band while in school. He participated in the York High Alumni band. He attended McPherson College in McPherson, Kansas. John married the late Ruby (Clouser) Minnich on July 6, 1963. They celebrated 57 years of marriage before Ruby’s passing in September of 2020. John worked a variety of jobs, including working for his father’s insurance agency in York and Rutter’s convenience store.
John was a long-time member of York First Church of the Brethren. He was active in the Lamplighter’s Sunday School class, sang in the Chancel choir and played in the handbell choir. Also, John was financial recorder at York First for many years. John had a servant heart and was always willing to help out when needed. John was an avid sports fan. He followed Penn State football. John enjoyed watching them win the Rose Bowl in January 2023. He followed professional baseball and was a New York Yankees fan all of his life. John enjoyed watching the Winter and Summer Olympics and other sporting events. John had many special memories of going to Sea Isle City, New Jersey with the Minnich family during the summer. In his later years, he and Ruby went to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and made many special memories there. John always enjoyed family gatherings.
John leaves behind his sons and their wives, Greg and Shirl Minnich of Mechanicsburg and J. Mark and Mary of York. He leaves behind his brother and sister-in-law Robert (Bob) Minnich and Jeanne Fitzpatrick of Washington DC. As well as numerous nephews, nieces, extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his sister, Patricia Miller. The family would like to thank Memorial White Rose Hospice staff for their support and care of John these last six months.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, March 4, 2023 at 11 am with refreshments after the service at York First Church of the Brethren, 2710 Kingston Rd., York. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Rd., York is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in honor of John to Camp Eder, 914 Mt.
