YORK – John H. Michal, Jr., 100, passed away Saturday, March 22, 2025 at Country Meadows of York West. He was the husband of the late Vivian A. (Kauffman) Michal.
Born September 16, 1924 in York, a son of the late Anna M. (Kauffman) and John Michal, Sr.; he was a 1943 graduate of Sparks High School in Maryland. Mr. Michal had been a project manager and maintenance supervisor at Caterpillar Inc. until his retirement after 25 years of service. Prior to Caterpillar, he had worked at Carew Steel. Mr. Michal used his talented mechanical skills as an inventor and held several patents. He was a US Army Air Corp Veteran of WWII where he served as a tail gunner on a B-24 Bomber. Mr. Michal’s crew flew 35 successful bombing missions over Europe. During his military service he earned five Oak Leaf Clusters and two Bronze Stars.
Mr. Michal is survived by two daughters, Jane M. and husband Peter E. Piepmeier of York and Judy A. and husband Ed Heiner of York New Salem; four grandchildren, Julie and husband Jack Grove, Katie and husband Dustin Sechrist, Ed and wife Reghan Heiner, Jimmy and wife Amanda Heiner; eight great grandchildren, Hanna and Emma Grove, Dylan and Kolby Sechrist, Duke and Porter Heiner, Addie and J. J. Heiner. He was preceded in death by his siblings, William Michal and Mary Michal.
Tribute services will be private. Burial will be in Susquehanna Memorial Gardens with full military honors presented by York County Veterans Honor Guard. Olewiler & Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 35 Gotham Place, Red Lion is in charge of arrangements.
