POTTSVILLE- John M. Norton, 65, of Pottsville, passed away Sunday at his home. Born in Pottsville on December 14, 1945, john was a son of the late Joseph and Sarah Norton. He was a 1963 graduate of Pottsville High School. He received his Bachelor's Degree in Political Science in 1967 and his Master's degree in History in 1969 from Penn State University. John was a history teacher at Pottsville Area High School for 31 years, retiring in 1999. At Pottsville Area High School, John served as an assistant football coach, dean of students, and cheerleader advisor over the course of his career. John played wide receiver for the Schuylkill Coal Crackers in his younger years. He was an avid Penn State fan. He was a member of the Pottsville Winter Carnival Board. He enjoyed traveling to the western part of the United States. He was a member in good standing of the "1320 Club". In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother J. William Norton, who passed away in 2004. John is survived by his 2 nieces, Sharon Rossi and Kimberly Norton; his great nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Saturday afternoon at 12:15 P.M. at Schlitzer-Allen-Pugh Funeral Home, Inc., 6th & West Market Streets, Pottsville. Reverend David W. Bechtel will officiate. Friends may call on Saturday from 10:15 A.M. until time of service at the funeral home. Interment will be held in Calvary Cemetery, Hillside, Pottsville. Memorial contributions may be made to the Joseph and Sarah Norton Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Pottsville Area School District Academic Center, 1501 West Laurel Blvd., Pottsville, PA 17901.
