John 'Jack' E. Ness, Jr.

YORK- John “Jack” E. Ness, Jr., 83, passed away on Saturday, September 3, 2011 at his residence. He was the husband of Gladys M. (Byers) Ness. The couple had celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary on June 17. A celebration of life tribute service will be 11 a.m. on Thursday, September 8, 2011 at Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Rd., York with his pastors, the Reverend David D. Danneberger and the Reverend Charles I. Hall officiating. A viewing will be from 9-11 a.m. prior to the service. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery. Mr. Ness was born on August 28, 1928 in York, the son of the late John E. and Cora H. (Chronister) Ness, Sr. Jack was a 1946 graduate of William Penn High School where he received an Industrial Diploma. He worked for 46 years at Teledyne Read Co, formerly Read Machinery, until his retirement in 1991. Mr. Ness was a member of Shiloh United Church of Christ. Jack was a life member of the Hawks Gunning Club and a member of the West Manchester Mall Walkers. He was also involved with Cub Scout Pack 18 and Boy Scouts Troop 18. Along with his wife, Gladys, Mr. Ness is survived by a son, John E. Ness and his wife, Rose of W. Manchester; a daughter, Joanne M. Strine of Hellam Twp.; three grandsons, Robert Ness and his wife, Devon, John “B.J.” Ness and his wife, Meghan and Christopher Ness and his wife, Kate; three step grandchildren, Heidi Patschke, Meghan Patschke and Aaron Patschke; two great grandsons, Austin Ness and Matthew Ness; and a sister, Delores H. Matson of Baltimore. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Cancer Patient Help Fund, 25 Monument Rd., Suite 194, York, PA 17403.
