RED LION – John Gilbert Myers, 89, went to be with his Heavenly Father on Thursday, March 11. John was born May 24, 1931, in East Berlin, Pennsylvania, to the late Herman and Beulah (Sowers) Myers. John was a devoted husband to his wife, Yvonne, whom he called Vonnie, for 66 years and a father of four. He served in the Army as military police stationed in New Mexico for 2 years. He was a proud graduate of Penn State University with a master’s degree in Agriculture Education. He taught at Red Lion High School in the Ag department for 35 years and led the FFA department, traveling with students to the National Convention in Kansas City for a number of years. He also led the Young Farmers program mentoring up and coming farmers, and was on the York County Conservation Board for many years. In addition to teaching, John also had an entrepreneurial spirit. He loved working outside and owned the Red Lion Garden Center for several years. However, his most rewarding business venture was Myers Tax and Accounting Service, which he started with Yvonne in 1967. They built the business into a clientele of more than a thousand and treated each client as a friend. John was active in the ministries at Bridgeway Community Church for many years as a Sunday School teacher, an elder, and a Board member. He loved reading the Bible, visiting shut-ins, and sharing the Gospel with others. Some of John’s favorite pastimes were attending Penn State football games and traveling—most notably to Israel, Alaska, Penn State bowl games, and several Caribbean cruises with his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his children, Eric (Garnet) Myers of Red Lion, Brian Myers of York, Wendy (Randy) Helm of Caledonia, Michigan, and Carl Myers of York, as well as seven grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife, Yvonne, and grandson, Derek Myers. Visitation will be held Tuesday, March 16 from 2:00-4:00pm and 6:00-8:00pm at Olewiler & Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory Inc., 35 Gotham Place, Red Lion, as well as Wednesday, March 17 from 10:00-11:00am at Bridgeway Community Church, 255 Reynolds Mill Road, York, with a Celebration of Life Service immediately following at 11:00am. Officiating the service will be his pastor, the Rev. Dr. David MacKenzie. Burial will follow at East Berlin Union Cemetery. All current Covid-19 guidelines and capacity restrictions will be followed. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Lifesong Hospice Foundation, 3880 TecPort Drive, Suite 2, Harrisburg, PA 17111. CLICK HERE TO SEND FLOWERS
