John F.S. White

York—John F. S. “Jack” White passed away at Manor Care Kingston Court on October 24, 2017 following a brief illness. Jack was born on May 25, 1928 to John B. and Mary (Dague) White in Greenwich, CT. He graduated from Greenwich High School and attended Westchester Community College in White Plains, NY. A terrific salesman, Jack worked at Bears Department Store in York for many years. He fully retired in 2008 from Asher Chocolates of Philadelphia. Jack has always been active in service to his country and his community. A veteran of the Korean War, he served as a radio signalman while stationed in Austria. He continued in the Army Reserve for eight additional years. Jack was a past Gold Coat President of Sertoma Club of York. He was a member of the following organizations; Heart Association Zipper Club Visitor, American Legion Post 0791 in Shiloh, VFW Post 8951, Hawks Gunning Club of York, Viking Athletic Assoc. of W. York and the Lake Club-Spring Grove. Most recently, Jack reached the milestone of being a volunteer at York Hospital for the past 21 years. A sports fan and athlete, Jack grew up playing all the sports, but concentrated on tennis and then became very passionate about golf. He taught both of his sons how to golf and now his son Tom is a golf professional in Colorado. Jack was also a huge fan of Penn State football. Jack is survived by his wife of 68 years, Jan; sons Tim of Lake Charles, LA, Tom of Denver, CO; daughter, Terri of Lititz; grandson, Matt Kossick of Shrewsbury; granddaughters, Ashley Burgeson of Fulshear, TX, Kelly Kalnas of Cranberry Twp; great grandchildren, Eli Burgeson and Amelia Kalnas. He was preceded in death by his younger brother, Robert. A private service will be held at the convenience of the family. In respect for Jack’s wishes, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Assoc., 610 Community Way, Lancaster, Pa 17603 or Hospice and Community Care, 685 Good Drive, Lancaster, Pa 17604.
