John F. Shields

TRUCKSVILLE-John F. Shields, 57 of Trucksville, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, February 8, 2013 at his home. He was a loving son, brother, nephew, cousin and uncle. He will be greatly missed by everyone who came in contact with him. Born in Bethlehem, he was a son of Edward J. and Gloria E. (Cin) Shields, both deceased. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Cynthia H. Filo who passed away August 29, 2010. He was a 1977 graduate of Kings College. He was a member of the Century Club and attended mass at the Chapel of Christ the King. He was recently employed by Howell Benefit Services, Inc. of Wilkes-Barre. He retired from PG & W after 30 years of service where he was employed as a computer programmer and payroll supervisor. In 1974, John became a referee and was a District 2 Chapter PIAA Volleyball official for close to 40 years. He officiated at many games, locally and across the state. He loved working with the kids and coaches. He served as a resident advisor at Kings College where he enjoyed helping the students and tutoring. He also served as the time keeper for Kings men’s and women’s basketball games. John served on the Board of Directors at P.G. & W. Employees Federal Credit Union. He gave generously of himself to many organizations and friends. Surviving are his brother, Edward J. Shields and his wife, Linda of Soddy Daisy, TN; a sister Gloria Sprankle and her husband, Lee of Altoona; brother-in-law Frank Filo of Plano, TX; nieces and nephews, Tracy Lynn Filo, Frank Filo, Jr., Michael Shields, Brandon Sprankle, Shannon Sprankle and Amy Shields; great niece, Kaya Sprankle. Calling hours will be held Saturday, February 23, 2013 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Kniffen O’Malley Funeral Home, Inc., 465 S. Main St., Wilkes-Barre. No service will be held at this time. Interment will be private at the family’s convenience. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given in his memory to the American Diabetes Association. (www.diabetes.org).
