John F. Shermeyer, Sr.

YORK- John F. Shermeyer, Sr., 95, of York Township passed away Monday, September 25, 2017 at York Hospital. He was the husband of the late Alice R. (Snyder) Shermeyer. A celebration of life service will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, October 2, 2017 at Life Tributes by Olewiler & Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 35 Gotham Place in Red Lion, with a viewing from 9-10 a.m. The Reverend Ronald L. Doverspike will be officiating at the service. Burial will be in Red Lion Cemetery with a flag folding provided by York County Veterans Honor Guard. Mr. Shermeyer was born in York on March 5, 1922, the son of the late Ivan E. and M. Augusta (Hauff) Shermeyer, Sr. He owned and operated John F. Shermeyer Heating and Oil. Mr. Shermeyer was a life member of Bethany United Methodist Church in Red Lion. He was a 1940 graduate of Red Lion High School. He was a member of VFW Post 5865, Moose Lodge #148, White Rose Square Dancers, AARP Golden Nuggets Senior Group, York County Historical Society, and Sampson WWII Navy Veterans. He was a Boy Scout Leader for Troop 29 of Bethany U.M. Church. He enjoyed watching baseball and travelling. He served in the US Navy in the Philippines in WWII. Mr. Shermeyer leaves a son, John F. Shermeyer, Jr. and his wife Lori of Wrightsville; two grandchildren, William F. Shermeyer and his fiancée Beth Shoff of Red Lion and Craig A. Shermeyer and his wife Emily of Brogue; five great grandchildren, Nicole, Nick, Leah, Josh, and Jack; two great, great grandchildren, Leo and Mason; a step grandson, Chad M. Mitzel; and two step great grandchildren, Rylee and Braden. He was preceded in death by a brother, Ivan Shermeyer, Jr. and two sisters, Faye Cambell and Janet Beck.
