YORK - John D. Bowman, Jr., 75, died Wednesday, January 2, 2008, in Green Valley, AZ. He was the husband of Jacqueline I. (Gower) Bowman with whom he celebrated a 51st wedding anniversary on February 19, 2007. A Celebration of Life Service will be 10 a.m. Friday, January 11, 2008 at Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, 1551 Kenneth Rd., York with the Rev. George Hummer, York Chaplain of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, officiating. Burial with military rites by the York County Veterans Honor Guard will be in Mt. Rose Cemetery. Viewing will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and 9 to 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with Masonic rites by White Rose Lodge #706 at 7:45 p.m. Thursday. Mr. Bowman was born September 19, 1932, in Marceline, MO. He was the son of the late John Denzil and Maude Frances (Fisher) Bowman. He retired in 1993 after 33 years with the National Security Agency. He was a United States Marine Corp veteran of the Korean Conflict and was a life member of the 1st Capitol Marine Corp League and the Korean War Veterans. He was also a member of the H-3-1 Korean War Veterans. He was a life member of the Military Order of the Devil Dogs (MODD - Pack 193), the Military Order of the Purple Heart York Chapter #390 and served as Past Commander of the Dept. PA MOPH . He was also a life member of both the Shiloh American Legion Post #791 and the VFW Post # 556. He was a member and Past Master of White Rose Lodge #706 F&AM, the Scottish Rite - Harrisburg Consistory 32 Degree, White Rose Scottish Rite, the Tall Cedars of Lebanon Forest #30 (PGTC) of which his granddaughter said he was the best "Poo-Bah" they ever had. He was a member of the High Twelve, Square Club #1052, the Zembo Shrine, the Zembo Legion of Honor, York County Shrine Club where he was a Past President, AARP, and the Phoenix Society of the National Security Agency. In addition to his wife, Mr. Bowman leaves three daughters, Elizabeth F. Brune and husband, Jerard of Naperville, IL, Merrie Jo Bowman-Ruth of Manchester, and Jill A. McCleary and husband, Gary of York; a son, John D. Bowman, III and wife, Stephenie of Canton, Bradford County; four grandchildren, Heather J. Brune, Holly J. Brune, John D. Bowman, IV, and James A. Bowman; and three brothers, Vernon T. Bowman of Washington, IL, Chester A. Bowman of Eureka, IL, and Clarence E. Bowman of Benson, AZ. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Emily E. McCleary on April 9, 2007. The family requests no flowers. Memorial contributions may be made to the Margaret E.
