John C. Gilbert

YORK-John C. Gilbert, 84, died Monday, June 28, 2010 at 2:05 p.m. at The Village at Sprenkle Drive. He was a life-long resident of York and the husband of the late Phyllis I. (Fahs) Gilbert, who died in 2003, to whom he was married to for 52 years. A Graveside Service for friends and family will be held at 1:00p.m. on Friday, July 2, 2010 at Greenmount Cemetery, 721 Carlisle Ave., York, PA 17404, with full military honors by York County Veterans Honor Guard at the start of the service. His pastor, The Reverend Brenda J. Ferree will be officiating at the service. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Rd. in York is in charge of the arrangements. John was born on January 2, 1926, the son of the late George C. and Nora B. (Masemer) Gilbert. He was a loving, and fun-loving, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle. He is survived by his son, Jeffrey C. "Bugman" Gilbert and wife Linda; and his daughter, Jana G. McCommon and husband Mike; grandchildren, Laura B. McCommon and Jessica S. McCommon, all of Carlisle. He also leaves, his brother, Charles C. Gilbert of York and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Romaine I. (Gilbert) Griffin and his brother Donald A. Gilbert. He was a 1944 graduate of York High School and is a veteran of WWII, US Navy, Pacific Theatre, 1944-1946. He graduated from Penn State University in 1953, with a Bachelor of Architecture and was registered to practice in 1958. He worked for Hamme Associates, Architects and Engineers for 46 years from 1953, becoming a full partner in 1963, until retirement in 1999. During his career he especially enjoyed designing churches and school buildings throughout South Central PA. He was a member and past Commander of AMVETS, York Post #2, a life-long member and past President of Sertoma Club of York. He also was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, Elk's Lodge #213, Reliance Fire Company and, PSU Alumni Association. Professional affiliations include member and past President of Construction Specifications Institute (CSI), central PA Chapter; member and past President of American Institute of Architects (AIA), central PA Chapter, and past Board Member of the PA Society of Architects (PSA). John was an avid Penn State fan, spending most of his free time building a family cabin in Michaux State Forest where he enjoyed hunting, fishing, watching wildlife, and relaxing around the campfire.
