Joan M. [Kruise] Washington

YORK - Joan M. [Kruise] Washington, 71, died Thursday, July 26, 2007 at her residence. She was the wife of the late Edward H. Washington, Sr. with whom she was married for 46 years when he passed away in 1999. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, July 31, 2007 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, 950 W. Market Street, York with the Rev. Dominic DiBiccaro officiating. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery. Viewings will be held from 7-9:00 PM Monday and 9:30-10:30 AM Tuesday at Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Road, York. Born January 30, 1936 in Altoona, a daughter of the late Joseph and Margaret [Semelsberger] Kruise, she along with her late husband, owned and operated Dunkin Donuts in West York and Henry's Home Beverage in East York. She was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. Mrs. Washington was an avid bingo player at Reliance Fire Co. and enjoyed volunteering for Compassionate Friends. She will always be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Mrs. Washington is survived by two sons, Edward H. Jr. and wife Sandra Washington and Steve A. and wife Karen Washington all of York; a daughter, Susan L. and husband Scott Green of York; eight grandchildren; four great grandchildren; three brothers, Kenneth, Joseph, and Donald Kruise all of Altoona; and two sisters, Loretta Mae Stegman and Carol Fagan both of Altoona. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Dianne [Washington] Shockley who passed away in 1985; and three brothers, Richard, Oren, and Robert Kruise; and two sisters, Mary Margaret Kennedy and Hilda Mae Esworthy.
