Joan K. (Schmidt) Cooney

YORK- Joan K. (Schmidt) Cooney, 80, passed away Sunday, September 1, 2013 at her residence. She was the wife of Albert A. Cooney with whom she celebrated 58 years of marriage on August 20, 2013. Services will be determined by the family at a later date. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Road, York, is in charge of arrangements. Born March 16, 1933 in Baltimore, MD, she was a daughter of the late William George Schmidt and Lillian M. (Price) Leidig. Joan was employed as a purchasing coordinator in medical research for 10 years at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in Bethesda, MD. She retired in October of 1993. Joan was a member of the Heidelberg United Church of Christ in York. She enjoyed needlework, quilting, traveling, shopping, dining out and reading. She was also an avid Baltimore Ravens fan. Mrs. Cooney leaves a daughter, Lory A. Powers and husband, Dan, of York; a granddaughter, Genevieve Powers of York; three brothers, Richard Schmidt of Middle River, MD, Robert Schmidt and wife, Maria of Joppatowne, MD and William “Billy” Schmidt of Baltimore; two sisters, Helen Hardesty of Great Falls, MT, and Jane Leidig of Glen Burnie, MD; and two sister-in-laws, Mary Little and husband Virgil of Baltimore, and Shirley Belz and late husband Pete of Baltimore, MD. She was preceded in death by two brothers, William G. Schmidt, JR. and Gordon Schmidt. Memorial contributions may be made to Heidelberg United Church of Christ, 47 W. Philadelphia St., York, PA 17401.
