Thomasville—Joan A. (Maerz) Smith, 79, died Thursday, December 27, 2012 at her residence in Jackson Township. She was the wife of William E. Smith. The couple celebrated 53 years of marriage April 4th. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 12 PM, Saturday, January 26, 2013 at Bristol Baptist Church, 43 School St., Bristol, CT 06010. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Rd, York is in charge of arrangements. Born October 19, 1933 in New Britain, CT, she was a daughter of the late Joseph A. and Dorothy (Barrows) Maerz and was raised in Plainville, CT. She was employed as an executive secretary with Veeder & Root, located in Simsbury, CT until her retirement. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Smith is also survived by one daughter, Jody S. Skomars and her husband David of Thomasville; two sons, Todd W. Smith and his wife Debbie of Plainville, CT and Michael T. Smith also of Plainville, CT, a daughter in law, Laurie Smith of Bristol, CT; nine grandchildren, Raechel Joan Rydel and her husband Joel Rydel of Norfolk, VA, Timothy P. Smith of New Britain, CT, Jerry Balukas of Charlotte, NC, Savannah and Mackenzie Smith of Louisville, KY, Brian, Christina, Emily and Matthew Dove all of Bristol, CT; two great grandchildren, Charlotte and Liam Rydel of Norfolk, VA; one sister, Carol Koskowski and her husband David, of Bristol, CT, a sister in law, Barbara Sonstrom of New Hartford, CT and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one son, Jeffrey F. Smith, one sister, Barbara Doten and one brother, Neal Maerz. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to The Music Committee, Bristol Baptist Church, 43 School St., Bristol, CT 06010.
