Jerome E. Barton, Sr.

POTTSVILLE - Jerome Elmer Barton Sr., 84, of Pottsville, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday morning surrounded by loved ones. He was born in Llewellyn on October 10, 1926, a son of the late Jerome G. and Celestine Starr Barton. In 1944 he graduated from Branch Twp. High School and then joined the Army Air Corp and he served overseas until he was honorably discharged in 1947. He was a member of the Amvets Post 180, the Pulaski Lodge #216 F.A.M., the Tall Cedars of Lebanon Schuylkill Forest #50, The American Legion Post 67, Anthracite Telephone Pioneers, Beckville Fish and Game and the Tulpehocken Rifle and Pistol Club. He was a 39 year employee of Bell Telephone of Pennsylvania, where he started his career as a line foreman / cable splicer and retired as the Motor Vehicles Supervisor. He is survived by: his wife, Jean M. Neifert Barton, Pottsville; a brother, Francis H. and his wife Dolores Barton, Harve de Grace, MD; a sister, Diane E. Artz, Llewellyn; two children, Jerome E. Jr. and his wife Judi, Pottsville, and Joan M. and her husband John Bowers, Pottsville, five grandchildren, Amy L. Witman, Jerome D. and his wife Stephanie, Jacob Charles, Heidi Allison Bowers and her companion Frank Scythes, and Rachel Lillian and her husband Shean McDill; four great grandsons, Peter D. Witman II, Timothy Jarod Witman, Tyler Slade Barton, and Eli Andrew Barton; several nieces and nephews and his constant companion his black lab Bear. Funeral services will be held on Thursday morning at 10 AM from the Schlitzer Allen Pugh Funeral Home, Inc., 6th & W. Market St., Pottsville. The Reverend Darcy Reis will officiate. Family and friends may call from the funeral home from 6-8 PM and Thursday morning from 9 AM until time of service. Interment will be in Schuylkill Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be sent to either the Hillside SPCA, PO Box 233, Pottsville, PA 17901 or the American Cancer Society, 16 N. 4th St., Minersville, PA 17954.
