Jean R. (Riley) Carter

LEWISBURG - Jean R. (Riley) Carter, 91, a resident of Buffalo Valley Lutheran Village, Lewisburg, PA, formerly of Girard and Erie, died on Saturday, October 6, 2012 at Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg. Jean was born on August 20, 1921 in Girard Twp, Erie County and was the daughter of the late Arthur L. and Eunice Mary (Stevens) Riley. Jean was a 1939 graduate of Rice Avenue Union High School (Girard, PA). On July 19, 1942, she married the late Edward G. “Ed” Carter, and celebrated 66 years of marriage before his death on April 15, 2009. As a young woman, she worked in the Erie County Courthouse and later in life, she worked as a bookkeeper at the Erie County Hospital and at the Pyramid Oil Company, the family business. She was also a dedicated homemaker, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Jean was a member and was involved with all aspects of the First Universalist Church in Girard. She was also a member of the Elk Valley Garden Club. She volunteered for many years at the Susquehanna Valley Visitors Bureau, along with her husband Ed. Jean was an avid gardener and enjoyed sewing and was a great friend to all and enjoyed entertaining family and friends. Jean is survived by two sons; Charles R. “Rock” Carter and his wife Linda and Christopher E. “Chris” and beloved Carolyn, all of Emmaus, one daughter; Terry Cole of Newark Valley, NY, six grandchildren; Lisa, Daniel, Emily, Kate, Andy and Ali, three great-grandchildren; Joseph, Heather and Chelsea, one brother and sister-in-law; Steven E. and Doris Riley of Erie and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers; Raymond and Bernard Riley. There will be a memorial service held on Saturday, November 3, 2012 at 1:00 pm at the Best Western Country Cupboard Inn, 7701 West Branch Highway (US Route 15), Lewisburg, PA with the Reverend Donald Cook officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Buffalo Valley Lutheran Village, Benevolent Care Fund, 889 Fairground Rd., Lewisburg, PA 17837. Arrangements are being handled by The Dale E.
