York—Jay J. Hartman, 90, died Saturday, May 10, 2014 at Manor Care Health Services-North. He was the husband of the late Dorothy A. “Dot” (Updegraff) Hartman to whom he was married for 62 years. A Celebration of Life Service will be 10 AM, Friday, May 16, 2014 at Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Rd, York with the Rev. Sara A. Gausmann officiating. A viewing will be held from 9-10 AM, Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be held in Prospect Hill Cemetery with full military honors provided by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. Born May 20, 1923 in Manchester, he was a son of the late Park M. and Katie P. (Fengfish) Hartman. He served in the United States Army and was a veteran of World War II. He was employed in the binding department at Maple Press for 20 plus years. After his retirement from Maple Press, he worked as a custodian at Northeastern High School. A member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, he was also an avid fisherman, loved children, had a craving for soda, loved swimming as a child and owned his own horse for many years. He followed and attended games of many local area baseball teams and for several years was a member of a bowling league. Using his woodworking skills, he hand-made several pieces of small furniture over the years and spent a lot of time drawing and coloring sketches, some of which won awards at the York Fair. Mr. Hartman is survived by one sister, Phyllis P. Strickhouser of York and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.
