YORK- Jane Hartzell Besser, 92, of York passed away Tuesday, August 21, 2012 at York Hospital. She was the wife of the late C. Edward Besser who passed away in 1998. They had been married 57 years. A celebration of life tribute service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 25, 2012 at Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Rd., York with Certified Celebrant, Betty Frey officiating. A visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. prior to the service. Born in Chambersburg, PA and raised in Hagerstown, MD she was the daughter of the late John Harvey Hartzell and Laura Wagner Hartzell. Jane spent several years in the 1960’s as costume designer for York Little Theatre including the shows “Can Can” and “The King and I”. She was Registrar of Vital Statistics for York Co. in the 1970’s. She spent many hours designing and sewing quilts, designing and crocheting afghans for the Linus Project and family. In her later years she loved to do NY Times crossword puzzles and liked to create puzzles as well. Reading, bowling, animals and bird watching were favorite pastimes. Mrs. Besser is survived by two sons, Ronald Besser of York and Lance Besser and his wife, Billie of Landisville; two grandchildren, Scott Besser of Stroudsburg and Dana Jolivet and her husband, Noel of Allentown; and one great-granddaughter, Maria Jane Jolivet. She was preceded in death by her daughter Carla in 1985.
