Jan K. Newman

RED LION – Jan K. Newman, 76, passed away Wednesday, May 31, 2023 at his home. He was the husband of Mary Ann (Smith) Shindell-Newman and the late Gloria A. (Marteny) Newman.

A Celebration of Life Tribute Service will be held at 10:00 AM Thursday, June 8, 2023 at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, 126 W. Main Street, Dallastown with Pastor Patti Bream officiating. A viewing will be held from 6-8:00 PM Wednesday at Olewiler & Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 35 Gotham Place, Red Lion. Burial will be in Pleasant View Church of the Brethren Cemetery with full military rites provided by York County Veterans Honor Guard.

Born August 23, 1946 in York, a son of the late Harry R. and Elsie P. (Herbst) Newman; he was a 1964 graduate of Dallastown Area High School. Mr. Newman was a sales representative with Nabisco Corp. for 23 years until his retirement. He then owned and operated Echo Barber Shop in Red Lion for 15 years. Jan was a lifelong member at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church where he was very active and had held various positions within the Church including Council President. He was active with Boys Scouts of America Troop 43; had served on Dallastown Borough Council; was a member of Dallastown American Legion Post 605; and Rescue Fire Company, Dallastown. In addition to his firefighting duties he served as Secretary at Rescue Fire Co. for over 30 years. Jan enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and traveling. He was a U.S. Army Veteran serving in Korea and Germany during most of his enlistment.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Newman is survived by a daughter, Gretchen M. and husband Kirby Rhodes of York; a son, Ben M. and wife Sue Newman of Onalaska, WI; a stepson, J. Robert Shindell, Ph.D. and his wife Christy of Austin, TX; five grandchildren, Erich and wife Cassiah Rhodes, Caleb Rhodes, Karis Newman, Jonathan Rhodes, and Timothy Newman; two step grandchildren, Jack and Charley Shindell; a great granddaughter, Everleigh Rhodes; and his brother, Cris and wife Cheryl Newman of Dallastown.

Memorial contributions in memory of Jan may be made to Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, 126 W. Main St., Dallastown, PA 17313.
